HEP Students To Receive Diplomas June 11 In Alamosa

Migrant and seasonal workers who earned general education diplomas through the University of Colorado at BoulderÂ’s High School Equivalency Program at Alamosa will graduate June 11. °µÍø½ûÇø 250 people are expected to attend the ceremony, which starts at 7 p.m. at Ortega Middle School, Alamosa. Families, friends and other supporters will be there to see 60 students ranging in age from 16 to 50 receive their high school equivalency diplomas. Fifteen of them passed their exams in both English and Spanish.

Chlorine Discovery Near Jupiter Moon Hints At Salt Presence On Surface

The recent discovery of chlorine above Io, a moon of Jupiter, indicates the odd object may hold common table salt, according to two University of Colorado at Boulder scientists. Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system, said CU-Boulder Associate Professor Nick Schneider and former post-doctoral researcher Michael Kueppers of CU’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. They believe the presence of chlorine – an ingredient of sodium chloride, or common table salt – is related to the violent volcanic activity.

Visitors to the Lamar Public Library this summer will be treated to a fascinating look at the insect world courtesy of the University of Colorado at Boulder. The library, at 104 E. Parmenter St., is hosting an exhibition of photographs as part of the universityÂ’s CU This Summer cultural outreach program. The exhibition, "Small Wonders: Insect Photos by Fran Hall," opens on June 14 and will run through Aug. 25. Admission is free and library hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Interior Secretary Babbitt To Speak At CU Program On Western Water Law

Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt will speak June 8 at the CU-Boulder Natural Resources Law Center program on western water law and policy, discussing the controversial report of the Western Water Policy Review Advisory Commission: "Water in the West: Challenge for the Next Century." The free Babbitt program, scheduled at 7 p.m. in Macky Auditorium, will kick off a three-day conference sponsored by the Natural Resources Law Center.

CU-Boulder Hires New Events Planner For Dennis Small Cultural Center

Lianna Dreyfus, the University Memorial Center cultural liaison at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has taken over events planning for the Dennis Small Cultural Center in the UMC, room 305. "The purpose of the center is to provide a place for students of color to come together and feel comfortable," said Dreyfus, a biracial and bilingual first-generation college graduate. "ItÂ’s also a place where students of color can talk about issues that impact them." The center also offers academic advising and counseling.

Researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder have been looking at why we tend to put on more weight and fat with the years Â… and what we can do about it. The research highlights the importance of older people remaining physically active to ward off weight gain and keep at bay associated health risks such as heart problems, high blood pressure, cancer and diabetes.

High-Ranking University Administrator Is Leaving CU-Boulder After 20 Years

Brangwyn Foote, assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is moving on. Foote has been appointed interim provost/vice president for academic affairs at the University of Maine, Farmington, beginning July 1. There she will be the second ranking university administrator and chief academic officer for the campus, responsible for academic leadership and with 10 academic departments reporting to her.

CU-Boulder Professor Named New Engineering Dean At Duke

Kristina M. Johnson, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder since 1985, has been named dean of engineering at Duke University in Durham, N.C., effective August 1999. An internationally known expert in optics, signal processing and computing, Johnson co-founded the Center for Optoelectronic Computing Systems headquartered at CU-Boulder. A joint effort with Colorado State University, the center is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Colorado Advanced Technology Institute.
