CU Boulder Chancellor Justin Schwartz announced today that the search for the next provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs is open. Interested candidates are invited to submit their application materials by Feb. 28. 

 

How to nominate, self-nominate or apply

“We are seeking an innovative, collaborative, engaged and empathic leader with a deep commitment to public higher education and the tenets of shared governance to serve as our next provost,” Schwartz said. “We also need a leader who is committed to CU Boulder’s mission and has a history of facilitating and advancing excellence.”

Inquiries, applications, nominations and self-nominations should be made directly through the , the executive search firm engaged to assist in the search process.

The provost fosters CU Boulder’s excellence in research, creative work and teaching through forging new academic initiatives and recruiting and retaining a world-class faculty, as well as ensuring rigorous review of key faculty personnel actions. The provost also has oversight of the planning, quality and delivery of education to CU Boulder’s undergraduate and graduate students, ensuring a holistic, inclusive integration of academic and student affairs that supports the intellectual, personal and professional development of all students.

In today’s announcement, the chancellor also thanked students, faculty and staff who participated in the listening sessions in December, which helped to inform the position profile for the next provost.

Finalists will visit campus in the spring semester. The chancellor plans to have a new provost in position by July 1, 2025.

Chancellor Justin Schwartz has opened the search for the next CU Boulder provost, inviting interested parties to submit their materials by Feb. 28.

The  (ELP), hosted by the CU system Employee Services office, provides an exceptional opportunity for faculty from the four CU campuses and system office to become effective leaders. ELP fellows participate in a nine-month (August–April) program designed to broaden their understanding of the University of Colorado and to equip them with the skills needed for effective leadership.

Eligibility and commitment 

  • The CU Boulder faculty nomination and selection process occurs in the spring semester. CU Boulder selects eight faculty fellows annually.   
  • Eligible nominees include tenured faculty who have shown their commitment to the university and their potential as future leaders. They may or may not currently serve in a leadership position. 
  • The program involves a significant time commitment from August to April that begins with a two-day retreat and monthly workshops held at the four CU campuses and the CU system office (see the  as an example; dates vary annually). Additionally, fellows engage in monthly conversations with CU Boulder senior leaders on the CU Boulder campus from September to April. 

Interested?  and indicate your interest to your dean so they may consider nominating you (faculty self-nominations are not accepted). Nominations are due Feb. 7, and successful nominees and their deans will be notified by April 30.

Chancellor Justin Schwartz invites nominations for the 2024 Chancellor’s Employee of the Year Award. This annual award is presented to CU Boulder staff in recognition of and appreciation for exceptional job performance and distinguished contributions to the campus community. Award criteria include job performance, leadership, service and interpersonal skills.

The award includes a prize of $2,000 after tax and a commemorative gift. The 2024 awards will be presented at a ceremony hosted by the chancellor.

Eligibility

  • All eligible CU Boulder classified and university staff may be nominated for this award.
  • Nominees must have been employed by CU Boulder for at least three years by the nomination deadline and must not have received any corrective and/or disciplinary actions within the last five years.
  • Employees may only receive this award once during their campus career.
  • University officers (i.e., deans, associate vice chancellors and above) are not eligible for this award, and nominations will not be considered.

Nomination information

Nominations may be submitted by any member of the campus community (staff, faculty or student) who has firsthand knowledge about the nominee.

Nominations should be submitted using the . Each nominee should have:

  • One primary nomination submission
  • Two additional supporting submissions by individuals other than the primary nominator
  • At least one of the submissions must be from the nominee’s direct supervisor

Nominations should address and provide specific examples of the following criteria:

Outstanding job performance

  • Demonstrates consistently outstanding performance in all areas of their job
  • Incorporates ethical practices and behaviors in all areas of their job

Exemplifies inspired leadership

  • Leads with integrity and in a way that contributes constructively to the department or campus’ mission
  • Identifies and addresses challenges that arise in an honest, thoughtful, and ethical manner
  • Works to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion practices

Extraordinary service to the unit, department, campus or surrounding community

  • Supports the unit, department, college, campus or surrounding community in unique ways that go beyond the employee’s job responsibilities

Exceptional interpersonal skills

  • Supports co-workers
  • Improves department/division/unit morale
  • Provides outstanding customer service
  • Consistently exhibits a positive attitude

Nomination submission process

To submit a nomination or supporting submission, please . 

Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30. No more than three total submissions will be accepted for each nominee. Submissions will not be accepted past the nomination deadline.

The Faculty Leadership Institute (FLI) is dedicated to identifying, nurturing and supporting emerging leaders as they chart their course toward advanced academic leadership roles. Each cohort, consisting of 12–15 faculty members, actively engages with campus leaders in targeted discussions about prevalent campus issues while honing essential leadership skills.

Throughout the academic year, FLI holds monthly meetings structured around engagements with campus leadership and leadership skill development. During these sessions, leaders discuss their experiences in their current positions, share insights into their leadership journey, and participate in open discussions on faculty-related concerns. Additionally, valuable opportunities for leadership training are provided by certified experts during the leadership development workshops.

To complement the formal monthly meetings, cohort members are welcome to join informal gatherings to foster a sense of connectedness and camaraderie within the cohort.

Faculty members interested in participating should submit their application by April 29. Preference is given to teaching associate professors and senior instructors, although all ranks are welcome to apply.
