Changing Your Major (or Adding a Major)

Current College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) B.S. degree students may change their major (or add a second major) using the process outlined below.

This form (linked below) can also be used to remove a second CEAS major. Biomedical Engineering majors can use this form to add/change a Pre-Medical Track, and Integrated Design Engineering majors can use this form to add/change a Disciplinary Emphasis and/or Concentration.

You must meet with your current (B.A.) academic advisor to discuss your plans. You'll need to meet the within-CEAS internal-B.S. admission criteria in order to switch into or add a CEAS B.S. degree program. Please do not fill out the Change of Major form linked below - it will not be accepted.

you'll need tocomplete an Intra-University Transfer to be admitted. Please do not fill out the Change of Major form linked below - it will not be accepted.

Process for current Engineering B.S. students to change their major (or add a second major) within the CEAS:

  1. First, gather information about the degree program you are considering:
    • Review a“what-if” degree audit for the degree program(s) you are considering, to learn more about degree requirements and how your current credits would apply.
    • Use theRecommended Four-Year Plan of Study in conjunction with the "what-if" degree audit to draft an initial semester-by-semester graduation plan for your desired degree program.
  2. Prior to officially changing or adding a major, you arestrongly encouragedto meet with an academic advisor in the new major*. It is very important to understand the requirements of the new major, and if changing your current degree plan could impact your graduation timeline. An academic advisor can help you review the degree plan and requirements, and answer any questions you may have.
    • Log intoBuff Portal Advising and click on theMeet with a Different Advisor tile to find meeting availability in your desired major (for more help, see below for a step-by-step guide). At a minimum, all majors have advising drop-in hours every Monday from 1-3pm when fall/spring classes are in session.
    • *Open Option Engineering (XXEN) majors:Prior to declaring your major, pleasemeet with yourcurrent Open Option academic advisor to discuss your interests and learn more about your desired major.
  3. If you are ready to change or add a major after completing the steps above, please complete the CEAS Add, Change, or Revise Engineering Major Form to initiate the official process.

Important notes:

  • It is your responsibility to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor in your new major. If you are unable to meet with an academic advisor before changing your major, you should schedule an appointment as soon as possible afterwards. Failure to meet promptly with an academic advisor may negatively impact your degree plan and could delay your graduation.
  • Any transfer credit will need to be reevaluated by your new major to determine if/how that credit will apply towards your new degree program (it may be different from how it worked with your initial major).
  • Any exceptions made to degree requirements will not automatically carry over to your new major, and will need to be reevaluated.
