Big Data
Dr Allen's opinion on Big Data in Biology
I spent my early career firmly in the study of transcription and regulators of transcription. I have extensive experience in molecular biology and RNA biology. As big data became prevalent, I learned the skills needed for data analysis. I am now competent in bioinformatics, specifically the analysis of microarrays and next generation sequencing data. I code in python, R and bash. However, when I started to learn data analysis I had little opportunity for personalized training. Therefore, I am a proponent of sharing my expertise with others. I believe those of us who have had to climb up the mountain of data analysis the hard way should let down ropes allow for faster and greater accesses to data. For this reason I designed and participated in teaching a free workshop on Next generation sequencing analysis at the °µÍø½ûÇø. This workshop is now an annual workshop open to all.
Workshops
The Dowell Lab, Allen Lab, Next Generation Sequencing core and BioFrontiers IT run two-week intensive Short Read Sequencing Analysis Workshops at CU-Boulder. http://dna.colorado.edu/education.html
