Before joining the MENV program at CU, Laura worked as the Associate Director for the STEM Community Alliance Program (STEMCAP) at the University of Utah, where she brought local scientists, artists, and community leaders into youth detention centers to provide informal STEAM education and college and career mentorship programming. During her time at STEMCAP, Laura led various environmental science/studies programming series and developed a network of community partners to direct existing educational resources to marginalized youth. Laura believes in the power of environmental education as a form of environmental justice and has witnessed firsthand the impact of helping vulnerable communities better understand the human health effects posed by environmental issues in their neighborhoods. She hopes to help others find careers that center environmental justice throughout diverse industries and sectors.
Laura earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Georgia before completing an M.S. in Environmental Humanities from the University of Utah, where she studied methods to increase the accessibility and inclusivity of environmental education. This work included creating place-based environmental education curricula for Salt Lake City youth. Laura also has experience working in the public and non-profit sectors focusing with a focus on conservation, resource interpretation, and community coalition-building.Ìý
Laura is passionate about interweaving science, art, and the humanities to help communities holistically understand and engage with their environment and advocate for environmental health and justice. She is also passionate about responsible, sustainable outdoor recreation and is an avid trail runner and rock climber.
Laura's Coaching Philosophy
Laura’s coaching philosophy is rooted in personalized goal-oriented advising that empowers students and alumni to navigate career transitions with confidence. She takes a strengths-based approach, helping individuals leverage their unique experiences. Through active listening and reflective questioning, she guides students in understanding their specific interests, clarifying their goals, exploring options, and developing actionable steps to get where they want to go.
Laura also provides hands-on support for application materials to help folks effectively market their skills and build confidence in their ability to not only secure but ultimately succeed in a particular role. Recognizing that careers are not linear, she emphasizes adaptability and continuous growth. Her approach is informed by the GROW model with a focus on helping individuals find impactful careers that align with their values, support a sustainable future, and scaffold their long-term goals.
