Engineering Plus becomes Integrated Design Engineering

In the spring of 2022, Chancellor DiStefano approved a proposal to change the name of the Engineering Plus ("e+") program to Integrated Design Engineering

The newly named program aligns more closely with comparable engineering degrees and will be better understood by employers, giving students a stronger presence in a competitive job market. The degree is popular with students, who typically transfer in from other engineering departments for a better fit, but is less recognizable to prospective students.

"The new name better reflects our current degree, which is part of the broader movement in engineering focusing on a cross-disciplinary holistic engineering education that brings professional skills into a technical context," said Angela Bielefeldt, director of the program.

The Engineering Plus program launched in 2017 as an evolution of the General Engineering program. Known for its project-based approach, smaller courses and ability to create a custom learning plan with cross-disciplinary focus and ABET accreditation, it attracts students seeking a more flexible and diverse engineering education experience.

The name change takes effect at the beginning of the fall 2022 semester and applies to the BS degree and the program. The course catalog prefix will change to IDEN.

The curricula and program features will not change, and all students graduating in or before May 2023 will have the choice to attain their degree in Engineering Plus or adopt the new name, Integrated Design Engineering.

After many listening sessions with students and faculty, analysis of the engineering degree market and careful research, all evidence backed the change. On April 8, 2022, the CU Regents officially approved the name change of Engineering Plus to Integrated Design Engineering.

The Engineering Plus faculty also voted unanimously for the new name, and it was approved by the college’s Undergraduate Education Council.
