CU-Boulder closes campus to non-affiliates on April 20 for third straight year

The °µÍø½ûÇø announced today it will be open to students, faculty and staff on Sunday, April 20, but for the third straight year will be closed to unauthorized non-affiliates.

For the past two years, CU-Boulder has closed the campus to non-affiliates on April 20. We have taken these steps to ensure that our research, creative work, teaching, studying, residential and student support services, and official business – which occurs on the campus seven days a week – are not compromised by the unwanted 4/20 gathering. For a third straight year, I am announcing that the campus will be closed to non-affiliates on April 20.

A new study led by the °µÍø½ûÇø bolsters the theory that the first Americans, who are believed to have come over from northeast Asia during the last ice age, may have been isolated on the Bering Land Bridge for thousands of years before spreading throughout the Americas.

Methane leaks from palm oil wastewater are a climate concern, CU-Boulder study says

In recent years, palm oil production has come under fire from environmentalists concerned about the deforestation of land in the tropics to make way for new palm plantations. Now there is a new reason to be concerned about palm oil’s environmental impact. An analysis published Feb. 26 in the journal Nature Climate Change shows that the wastewater produced during the processing of palm oil is a significant source of heat-trapping methane in the atmosphere. But the researchers also present a possible solution: capturing the methane and using it as a renewable energy source.

JILA physicists discover ‘quantum droplet’ in semiconductor

NIST news release JILA physicists used an ultrafast laser and help from German theorists to discover a new semiconductor quasiparticle—a handful of smaller particles that briefly condense into a liquid-like droplet. JILA is a joint institute of CU-Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Chancellor's Corner: Staff Council is an opportunity to serve CU and Boulder

The Boulder Campus Staff Council elections will occur within the next few weeks. Staff Council is a vital governance group for CU-Boulder that works hard to improve both the CU-Boulder campus and the Boulder community at large. As its elections approach, I ask all classified and professional exempt staff to consider becoming involved with Staff Council. Further, I encourage all supervisors to discuss the importance of this service with their employees and to provide the support and encouragement necessary for such service.

The award recipients will be honored at the Equity and Excellence Celebration on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 in the Glenn Miller Ballroom.
