University of Colorado at Boulder Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson will provide a glimpse of his broad goals and priorities for the campus in a speech on Friday, Sept. 8, in Old Main Chapel. The talk, which is open to the campus and public, begins at 8:15 a.m. following an informal breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on the Norlin Quad outside of Old Main on the CU-Boulder campus.

The University of Colorado at Boulder's "two strikes" policy for enforcement of underage drinking has become an effective way for the campus to guide students, particularly freshmen, toward more responsible behavior, according to Jamal Ward, director of the Office of Judicial Affairs. Under the two strikes policy, adopted in fall 2004, students can be suspended after two underage drinking violations, but violations that harm other people are a primary focus of the policy's enforcement in 2006, Ward said.

The University of Colorado at Boulder is in the process of admitting a small group of clean and sober undergraduates recovering from addictive disorders to participate in its new Center for Students in Recovery starting this fall.

At noon on Sept. 11, the University of Colorado at Boulder School of Law and the CU Law Alumni Board will hold a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the new Wolf Law Building on the Boulder campus. The ceremony will recognize the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Organizers of the ceremony also will unveil a bronze plaque dedicated to the memory of CU alumni killed during the attacks.

The research field of media, religion and culture is the focus of three doctoral dissertation fellowships and one post-doctoral fellowship awarded by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder for the 2006-07 academic year. Shazia Iftkhar of the University of Wisconsin, Christine Hoff Kraemer of Boston University and Montré Aza Missouri of the University of London each will receive a $12,000 stipend from the Lilly Endowment in Indianapolis as part of their doctoral dissertation fellowships.

An in-class writing assignment designed to boost students' sense of identity and personal integrity reduced the achievement gap between African-American and nonminority students by 40 percent, according to a new study by a University of Colorado at Boulder researcher.

The University of Colorado's sportsmanship program, "Compete with Class" enters its fourth year with this Saturday's football match-up against Montana State at Folsom Field. Game time is 1:30 MST. CU administrators hope that good sportsmanship prevails both in the trenches and in the stands. Compete with Class was initiated by the Big 12 for all its member schools and is an integral part of the effort.

Villagers in Muramba, Rwanda, now have an effective, easy-to-use water purification system that can deliver clean drinking water to the entire community, thanks to an Engineers Without Borders team from the University of Colorado.

The University of Colorado at Boulder is taking part in a study to determine how helpful parent-teen talks are when it comes to alcohol use. All parents of incoming freshmen this fall received a handbook encouraging them to talk to their sons and daughters about alcohol use before they arrive on campus, according to Steve Bentley, director of the substance abuse program at CU-Boulder's Wardenburg Health Center. The study also will examine the best ways to prompt parents to have that difficult talk.

CU Police will strictly enforce rules violations on substances and materials banned from football games at the University of Colorado at Boulder this fall, and fans could be ejected from games for unruly behavior directed at stadium officials and other fans. Banned materials include alcoholic beverages, cans, glass bottles, ice chests or liquid containers that are a gallon or more in size. Fans may bring one nondisposable container no larger than two liters -- or one-half gallon -- or they may bring one factory-sealed bottle of water up to one liter into the stadium.
