The named Kristi Wold-McCormick, PhD, as campus registrar, effective June 16. Wold-McCormick comes to CU-Boulder from North Dakota State University (NDSU), where she served as registrar for the past twelve years.

At midyear, Colorado poised for continued growth in 2014, says CU Leeds School

The Colorado economy continues to outperform the U.S. economy and grow at a magnitude that slightly exceeds previous expectations, according to the midyear economic outlook released today by the ’s Leeds School of Business. Colorado’s employment is up by 3 percent year-over-year from May 2013 to May 2014. A total gain of 68,000 jobs in Colorado is expected for 2014 -- an upward revision to a December estimate of 61,300 jobs for the year.

CU-Boulder instrument onboard Hubble reveals the universe is ‘missing’ light

Something is amiss in the universe. There appears to be an enormous deficit of ultraviolet light in the cosmic budget. Observations made by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, a $70 million instrument designed by the and installed on the Hubble Space Telescope, have revealed that the universe is “missing” a large amount of light.

Jin awarded Isaac Newton Medal of the Institute of Physics

Deborah Jin has won the 2014 Isaac Newton Medal, the highest accolade given by the Institute of Physics. She was cited for her experimental work in laser cooling atoms. This work has led to the practical demonstration of universal laws that upderpin fundamental quantum behavior.

CU-Boulder-led team identifies fossils of tiny, unknown hedgehog

Meet perhaps the tiniest hedgehog species ever: Silvacola acares. Its roughly 52-million-year-old fossil remains were recently identified by a -led team working in British Columbia. The hedgehog’s scientific name means “tiny forest dweller,” said CU-Boulder Associate Professor Jaelyn Eberle of the geological sciences department, lead author on the study. The creature -- a new genus and species to science -- was only about 2 inches long, roughly the length of an adult thumb.

Voicemail changes coming soon

CU-Boulder is embarking upon a large-scale project to replace our aging telephone and voice messaging systems with a new Cisco Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Unified Communications system. Some of those changes require your attention. On the evening of Wednesday, July 23, campus voicemail services will be transferred from the current system to a new Cisco voicemail system. The confidence of Colorado business leaders remains positive and has slightly increased going into the third quarter of 2014, according to the most recent Leeds Business Confidence Index, or LBCI, released today by the ’s Leeds School of Business. The third quarter LBCI posted a reading of 61.2, an increase from 61 last quarter.
