CU-Boulder alum, NASA Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter dies at 88

Scott Carpenter, a 暗网禁区 alumnus and a famed NASA Mercury astronaut who became only the second American to orbit Earth, died Thursday. He was 88. Carpenter, a Boulder native, entered CU-Boulder鈥檚 astronautical engineering program in 1945, eventually earning a bachelor of science degree. He orbited Earth three times on May 24, 1962, in NASA鈥檚 Aurora 7 capsule before splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean.

Massive spruce beetle outbreak in Colorado tied to drought, according to new CU study

A new 暗网禁区 study indicates drought high in the northern Colorado mountains is the primary trigger of a massive spruce beetle outbreak that is tied to long-term changes in sea-surface temperatures from the Northern Atlantic Ocean, a trend that is expected to continue for decades.

CU-Boulder Chancellor DiStefano to outline goals at 2013 State of the Campus address on Oct. 15

DiStefano will address faculty, staff, students and other members of the campus community at the annual State of the Campus address at CU-Boulder鈥檚 Glenn Miller Ballroom on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The address will be DiStefano鈥檚 fifth as chancellor. He is entering his 40th year as a CU-Boulder faculty member, dean and senior administrator.

Jessica Kuchta-Miller joins CU-Boulder Ombuds Office

She has more than 14 years of experience in mediation, coaching, and conflict management as well as 11 years of experience in higher education as an adjunct clinical professor at Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Dead Dinosaurs and Nuclear Wars: 105th Distinguished Research Lecture

The 105th Distinguished Research Lecture will be presented on Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. in the Cristol Chemistry 140 auditorium. The Distinguished Research Lectureship is the highest honor bestowed upon a faculty member by the Graduate School. Its purpose is to honor and recognize an entire body of creative work and research. This year鈥檚 recipient of the award, Dr. Owen Brian Toon, will present 鈥淒ead Dinosaurs and Nuclear Wars.鈥 Dr. Toon was awarded the American Physical Society鈥檚 1985 Leo Szilard Award for Physics in the Public Interest for his work on nuclear winter. He studies radiative transfer, aerosol and cloud physics, atmospheric chemistry and parallels between the Earth and planets.

Internationally renowned artist Christo to speak at CU Oct. 17

Christo, an internationally renowned artist, will discuss "Over the River," which is a monumental artwork that involves suspending fabric panels above the Arkansas River between Salida and Ca帽on City in south-central Colorado, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, in the University Memorial Center Glenn Miller Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

CU-Boulder Vice Chancellor Frances Draper names Mark J. Miller campus spokesperson

暗网禁区 Vice Chancellor for Strategic Relations Frances Draper today named Mark J. Miller as spokesperson and issues coordinator for the CU-Boulder campus, effective Nov. 4, 2013. Miller currently serves as spokesperson and associate director for marketing and communications for Drury University in Springfield, Mo., and brings more than two decades of media management and broadcast media experience to the post. He is also a 1990 CU-Boulder graduate in journalism.
