Animal Behavior Society meeting at CU-Boulder to feature public talks, activities, film festival

The 50th annual meeting of the international Animal Behavior Society to be held at the July 28-Aug. 2 will feature several public events, including lectures, scientific demonstrations and a film festival. The public lectures, to be held at the Glenn Miller Ballroom in the University Memorial Center, are part of the Applied Animal Behavior Public Day on Sunday, July 28, titled “Creating Quality Lives for Dogs and Cats Through the Science of Animal Behavior.”

CU raises $258.8 million in 2012-13, a record for private support

Donors gave a record $258.8 million to the University of Colorado system during the past fiscal year. Nearly 2,500 programs were supported by nearly 50,000 individuals, with about half these funds, or $128.8 million, donated through the University of Colorado Foundation. Approximately $130 million in private support was given directly to the university and the CU Real Estate Foundation. The total raised exceeds the previous record set in 2012 by 13 percent.

Sanders receives STEM Leadership Hall of Fame award

Lucy Sanders, CEO for the National Center for Women & Information Technology ( NCWIT ) was recently recognized as a national U.S. News STEM Leadership Hall of Fame awardee. NCWIT is a non-profit organization housed within the ’s College of Engineering and Applied Science , and helps its members more effectively recruit, retain and advance girls and women in K-12 through college education, and from academic to corporate and startup careers.

CU ecology prof garners two high honors

Pieter Johnson, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at CU-Boulder, is having a pretty good year. He and a co-researcher have won an award recognizing outstanding contributions to ecology, and he has been named an Early Career Fellow by the Ecological Society of America.

Rick George eager to embrace changes at CU-Boulder

Things have changed at CU. What Rick George steps into in 2013, both locally and nationally, bears little resemblance to what he left when he waved so-long to college athletics in 1998. Since then, he’s remained in sports but in different positions at different levels – a factor that played well to the CU search committee. “I’ve been in sports all my life and never done anything else . . . CU study illuminates mortality differences between nondrinkers and light drinkers

As a class, people who don’t drink at all have a higher mortality risk than light drinkers. But nondrinkers are a diverse bunch, and the reasons people have for abstaining affects their individual mortality risk, in some cases lowering it on par with the risk for light drinkers, according to a University of Colorado study.

Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano today named Rick George as director of intercollegiate athletics at CU-Boulder, effective Aug. 12, 2013. George currently serves as president of business operations for the Texas Rangers major league baseball team and has spent more than three decades as a sports executive in the collegiate and professional ranks, including a stint as assistant athletic director for football operations for CU from 1987-91.
