Waleed Abdalati named new director of CIRES

Waleed Abdalati has been named the new director of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or CIRES, a joint institute of the and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Abdalati is a CIRES Fellow, a CU-Boulder professor of geography and director of the CIRES Earth Science and Observation Center. He will take office on July 1.

CU-Boulder names James Austin interim dean of College of Music

Provost Russell Moore today announced the appointment of James Austin as interim dean of the College of Music effective July 1. Austin, a professor of music education, joined CU-Boulder’s College of Music in 1994. He has served as associate dean of undergraduate studies since 2006. He was the music education chair from 1997 to 2007. In 2004, the college awarded Austin the Richard Bern Trego faculty fellowship.

CU-Boulder 4/20 expenses for 2013 fell by nearly $17,000

The reduced the cost of curtailing the 4/20 event by nearly $17,000 in 2013 compared with costs incurred in 2012. CU-Boulder spent $107,794 to close the campus to non-affiliates this year, and $124,561 to close the campus on April 20, 2012.

Last year, I announced an aggressive goal of $100 million in annual giving for our campus. In May the university announced a realignment of the development structure to move fundraising staff from the CU Foundation to the university. Folding our fundraising arm into the fabric of the university will result in a more coordinated development effort and will reflect the operations of high-performing public universities nationwide.
