Clouds over the central Greenland Ice Sheet last July were 鈥渏ust right鈥� for driving surface temperatures there above the melting point, according to a new study by scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the universities of Wisconsin, Idaho and Colorado. The study, published April 3, 2013 in Nature, found that thin, low-lying clouds allowed the sun鈥檚 energy to pass through and warm the surface of the ice, while at the same time trapping heat near the surface of the ice cap. This combination played a significant role in last summer's record-breaking melt.

The deadline for the friendly Be Colorado SUCCEED Health Assessment campus participation rate competition has been extended until this Friday, April 5, and it鈥檚 a good thing for the Boulder campus. We currently trail all the other campuses with only 13% of our employees participating thus far. We鈥檙e also still below our 14.67% participation rate from the last campus competition, and I thought we could easily meet our goal this year of 25%.

The University of Colorado Technology Transfer Office is presenting awards April 1 to university researchers and companies representing best practices in the commercialization of university technologies. The TTO will present the Boulder campus awards to four researchers and one startup company during its annual Entrepreneurship Under the Microscope event, a celebration of campus entrepreneurship co-hosted with CU-Boulder鈥檚 Deming Center for Entrepreneurship.

Following today's U.S. Supreme Court decision declining to hear an appeal from former CU faculty member Ward Churchill, CU President Bruce D. Benson and CU-Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano issued a joint statement, saying in part, "The Supreme Court鈥檚 decision upholds a unanimous line of rulings from the Colorado courts determining that the university has the right and obligation to ensure high professional standards from its faculty." University of Colorado Board of Regents Chair Michael Carrigan also issued a statement on the court's decision.
