A high-flying NASA mission over Costa Rica and Panama in July and August should help scientists better understand how tropical storms influence global warming and stratospheric ozone depletion, says a University of Colorado at Boulder professor who is one of two mission scientists for the massive field campaign.

A new study spearheaded by the University of Colorado at Boulder's National Snow and Ice Data Center indicates wind-blown dust from drought-stricken and disturbed lands in the Southwest can shorten the duration of mountain snow cover hundreds of miles away in the Colorado mountains by roughly a month.

University of Colorado at Boulder writing instructor Steven Wingate has been awarded the 2007 Katherine Bakeless Nason Fiction Prize from the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference of Middlebury College in Vermont. Wingate won for his short-story collection "Wifeshopping," which will be published by Houghton-Mifflin publishers next spring. Since 2001, he has taught in the Program for Writing and Rhetoric in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Eight of the country's top Latino high school graduates will receive college grants from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation during a prestigious national ceremony on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus. The foundation, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization, will hold its annual National Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards Ceremony at Folsom Field on Thursday, June 21. In addition to the students, the foundation will honor an outstanding high school educator and two up-and-coming Hollywood stars.

A special delegation of University of Colorado at Boulder community members will lay a wreath of flowers at the grave of Andrew J. Macky in Columbia Pioneer Cemetery at Ninth and Pleasant streets in Boulder on Monday, June 11. The group will be led by CU Regent Cindy Carlisle, who represents Colorado's 2nd Congressional District on the nine-member elected board. The group will lay the flowers at Macky's grave at 1 p.m. Members of the media, including photographers, are invited to cover the event.
