Eva Garroutte, author of "Real Indians: Identity and the Survival of Native America," will speak at the University of Colorado at Boulder Oct. 25 as part of the Center of the American West's Modern Indian Identity series. Her talk, "My Father's Stories: Remembering Oklahoma," is free and open to the public. The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in the ATLAS building auditorium and will be followed by a reception in the ATLAS lobby.

The U.S. Court of Federal Claims, also known as "the People's Court," is holding its 20th judicial conference on Wednesday, Oct. 10, and Thursday, Oct. 11, at the University of Colorado at Boulder Law School. During the "Claims Against the Sovereign" meeting, more than two-dozen federal court judges from the historic Washington, D.C., court will meet in the Wolf Law Building, including Chief Judge Edward J. Damich and 23 other active judges.

University of Copenhagen ice-core expert Dorthe Dahl-Jensen will speak on ancient Greenland and climate change on Friday, Oct. 12, at the University of Colorado at Boulder as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series hosted by CU-Boulder's Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences. The talk, which is free and open to the public, will be in the CIRES Auditorium in the Ekeley Science Building. A collage created by a group of artists with communication disabilities stemming from stroke or brain injuries will be on display this month at the University of Colorado at Boulder's Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Center. The center will unveil an artwork display by the Aphasia Community Art Studio during a public viewing and reception that will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19. The exhibit is a collaborative effort between CU-Boulder and Naropa University's art therapy department.

The University of Colorado at Boulder will stage the first college production of "Dead Man Walking," an opera based on the acclaimed book by Sister Helen Prejean, a Catholic nun who opposes the death penalty. The university's opera program will stage the production at Macky Auditorium on the CU-Boulder campus at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28. The opera contains scenes for mature audiences only. Parental discretion is advised.

One of the nation's largest professional associations for Hispanic lawyers, judges and law students has named Lorenzo Trujillo, assistant dean of the University of Colorado at Boulder Law School, the 2007 Latino Lawyer of the Year. Trujillo, who graduated from CU's law school in 1993, received the award during the Hispanic National Bar Association's annual convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Oct. 3-7. Trujillo has served as general counsel and regional president of the association and has been president of the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association.

A new use of cutting-edge Internet technology will bring a live performance of the Philadelphia Orchestra to the Black Box Theater in the ATLAS building at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Oct. 12. The presentation, arranged by the Center for Arts, Media and Performance, will begin with a pre-show at 11:30 a.m. followed by the all-Beethoven concert led by guest conductor Peter Oundjian at noon. The event is free and open to the public.

Lucy Sanders, who directs the National Center for Women and Information Technology on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus, has been inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame.

The University of Colorado at BoulderÂ’s Center for Students in Recovery has begun its second year by encouraging participating students to take a larger role in developing activities to help them on their clean and sober journeys through college.

University of Colorado at Boulder Professor Steve Lekson will describe his most recent archaeological research in New Mexico's Chaco Canyon in a free public talk on Monday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. in room 220 of the Eaton Humanities Building on campus.
