The University of Colorado at Boulder has been selected to oversee a huge research project in the southern Rocky Mountains and Colorado Plateau that will address large-scale ecological problems affecting grasslands to glaciers as part of a proposal under final review by the National Science Foundation.

Xcel Energy has become the primary sponsor of the 2007 University of Colorado Solar Decathlon team with its agreement to contribute $200,000 toward the zero-energy solar home being designed and built by CU-Boulder students, it was announced today. Following the competition, Xcel Energy will make the home available for public education purposes and continuing solar research at a location still to be determined.

University of Colorado at Boulder physics Professor Margaret Murnane has been named a Fellow of the Association for Women in Science in recognition of her efforts to recruit, retain and mentor women in the field of physics. Murnane was one of 10 fellows selected in 2007 for their dedication and commitment to the advancement of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. She was the only recipient in the Rocky Mountain region and is one of only 119 fellows named since the program began in 1996.

Kendo and taekwondo demonstrations, dance performances and a sampling of foods from across Asia are some of the highlights of the University of Colorado at Boulder's "Asia Day" on Saturday, March 17. The free public event presented by the CU-Boulder Center for Asian Studies will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fleming Law Building on the Boulder campus. The Fleming Law Building is located near the corner of Baseline and Broadway, south of Fiske Planetarium, and can be accessed via Regent Drive and Kittredge Loop Drive.

University of Colorado at Boulder Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson today said two CU students arrested in connection with a bias-motivated Boulder assault early Sunday morning have been suspended from the university pending a full hearing by CU-Boulder's Office of Judicial Affairs. Boulder Police on Sunday morning arrested CU undergraduates Adam Perez and Eric Schorling. Perez is a 21-year-old senior majoring in molecular, cellular and developmental biology. Schorling, also 21, is a junior anthropology major.

Thoughtful discourse among an informed citizenry can be the key to creating a more effective representative government, says a communication scholar who will speak in a public talk at the University of Colorado at Boulder March 19. John Gastil, a University of Washington associate professor of communication, will be the featured speaker for the annual Josephine Jones lecture sponsored by the CU-Boulder communication department.

As the textbook buyer for the University of Colorado at Boulder Book Store, Jason Katzman has seen competition to paperbound textbooks before, and after 17 years in the industry he says paper still rules, at least for now. Last fall the CU Book Store on campus started carrying a limited number of electronic textbooks, or e-textbooks, a new product being offered nationally on college campuses.

University of London scholar Cyprian Broodbank will speak at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Tuesday, March 13, about the island of Kythera in the Aegean Sea and its relationship to the Minoans of Crete during the Bronze Age. The 7 p.m. talk, which is free and open to the public, is titled "Before Aphrodite: the Island of Kythera and the Minoans in the Aegean." The event will be held in the Ramaley Biology Building, room N1B23, and is sponsored by the CU-Boulder classics department and the Boulder Society of the Archaeological Institute of America.

An in-depth look at the science of lasers -- including how they are used to transmit phones calls and emails -- and the physics of music will be featured in two separate science outreach programs March 17 at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The CU Wizards show “At the End of the Rainbow” is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. March 17 in Duane Physics, room G1B30. At 2 p.m., the Saturday Physics Series show “Physics of Musical Sound” also will be held in G1B30.
