South Park’s unsung genius

When animation director and co-producer of "South Park" Eric Stough (Film’95) started work on the quirky adult sitcom show 16 years ago, he cut out the famous cartoon characters from construction paper. Today, he and his team use digital software to produce a similar effect, lending, in the process, a certain creative genius that has helped the animated sitcom become one of Comedy Central’s highest-rated shows.

Alan Nelson, grounds specialist in Facilities Management, came on board as a grounds supervisor in 1986. Over the years, he has helped to shape the physical environment that routinely finds CU-Boulder in top-ten lists for most beautiful campuses.

The will hold its winter commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 20, in the Coors Events Center on campus. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public. Due to traffic delays, and ongoing construction on U.S. 36 leading into Boulder, early arrival is strongly advised. The ceremony will honor candidates for 1,899 degrees, including 1,399 bachelor’s degrees, 310 master’s degrees, nine law degrees and 181 doctoral degrees.

Landsat 8 helps unveil the coldest place on Earth

Scientists recently recorded the lowest temperatures on Earth at a desolate and remote ice plateau in East Antarctica, trumping a record set in 1983 and uncovering a new puzzle about the ice-covered continent. Glaciologist Ted Scambos and his team found temperatures from −92 to −94 degrees Celsius (−134 to −137 degrees Fahrenheit) in a 1,000-kilometer long swath on the highest section of the East Antarctic ice divide. Scambos is lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center, which is a part of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the .
