The University of Colorado at Boulder has appointed Derrick K. Watson, a campus veteran with more than 20 years of administrative experience, as its new director of Environmental Health and Safety. Watson's appointment became permanent on Oct. 15 after he served in the position on an interim basis starting Aug. 1. He will report to Paul Tabolt, vice chancellor for administration, for whom he has been an assistant since 2001.

Businesses have long made decisions on where to locate partly based on taxes and a new study by three university economists now says free agent baseball players do so, too. Major League Baseball teams in Florida, Texas and Washington benefit from having no state income taxes because they are able to get free agents to accept offers of lower salaries, according to the authors of "Baseball Salaries and State Income Taxes: The 'Home Field Advantage' of Income Taxes on Free Agent Salaries."

Award-winning photographs by two of the world's top polar region photographers, Pat and Rosemarie Keough, will be on display at the University of Colorado at Boulder from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31. The traveling exhibit, "Antarctica - Passion and Obsession," illustrates the extreme landscape of the world's 7th continent and is composed of more than 70 images from the Keoughs' acclaimed book "Antarctica," which won 11 international gold honors.

Foundation and Endowment Money Management magazine named the University of Colorado Foundation as the “Large Foundation of the Year” at its 2007 Nonprofit Awards for Excellence ceremony on Monday, Oct. 22. The magazine, an Institutional Investor publication, selected the CU Foundation based on its superior investment performance, innovation and outstanding asset allocation moves, foundation officials said.

The University of Colorado at Boulder has been named one of the nation's 25 most sustainable campuses by the Sustainable Endowments Institute, which today issued its 2008 College Sustainability Report Card evaluating campus sustainability policies at 200 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

Sister Helen Prejean, the Catholic nun and death penalty opponent who authored "Dead Man Walking," will visit the University of Colorado at Boulder campus on Friday, Oct. 26, to participate in a panel discussion about her work. The panel will feature Prejean, "Dead Man Walking" opera composer Jake Heggie and CU-Boulder sociology chair and Professor Michael Radelet. The panel will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, in Grusin Music Hall at the College of Music's Imig Building on the CU-Boulder campus.

o Eight cases of community-associated MRSA, or Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, have been diagnosed in students at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Two of the students live in residence halls and the remainder live off campus.
