Collage By Artists With Aphasia To Debut At CU-Boulder On Oct. 19

A collage created by a group of artists with communication disabilities stemming from stroke or brain injuries will be on display this month at the University of Colorado at Boulder's Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Center. The center will unveil an artwork display by the Aphasia Community Art Studio during a public viewing and reception that will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19. The exhibit is a collaborative effort between CU-Boulder and Naropa University's art therapy department.

CU Opera To Stage 'Dead Man Walking' Oct. 26-28 At Macky Auditorium; Sister Helen Prejean Part Of Discussion Oct. 26

The University of Colorado at Boulder will stage the first college production of "Dead Man Walking," an opera based on the acclaimed book by Sister Helen Prejean, a Catholic nun who opposes the death penalty. The university's opera program will stage the production at Macky Auditorium on the CU-Boulder campus at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28. The opera contains scenes for mature audiences only. Parental discretion is advised.

CU-Boulder Assistant Law School Dean Lorenzo Trujillo Named 2007 Latino Lawyer Of The Year

One of the nation's largest professional associations for Hispanic lawyers, judges and law students has named Lorenzo Trujillo, assistant dean of the University of Colorado at Boulder Law School, the 2007 Latino Lawyer of the Year. Trujillo, who graduated from CU's law school in 1993, received the award during the Hispanic National Bar Association's annual convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Oct. 3-7. Trujillo has served as general counsel and regional president of the association and has been president of the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association.

Internet2 Will Bring Philadelphia Orchestra Performance To CU-Boulder's ATLAS Building Oct. 12

A new use of cutting-edge Internet technology will bring a live performance of the Philadelphia Orchestra to the Black Box Theater in the ATLAS building at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Oct. 12. The presentation, arranged by the Center for Arts, Media and Performance, will begin with a pre-show at 11:30 a.m. followed by the all-Beethoven concert led by guest conductor Peter Oundjian at noon. The event is free and open to the public.

$2.3 Million Gift Establishes J.D. Abrams Multicultural Student Center At CU-Boulder

J.D. and Elsie Abrams, longtime supporters of the University of Colorado at Boulder, have committed $1.5 million to establish a multicultural student center and an additional $800,000 to enhance the J.D. Abrams Engineering Scholarship Fund. The J.D. Abrams Multicultural Student Center will be part of the new Center for Community at CU-Boulder. The community center will include a new dining hall, programs and student services that will enrich the student experience.

Arctic Sea Ice Shatters All Previous Record Lows: Diminished Ice Leads To Northwest Passage Opening

Arctic sea ice during the 2007 melt season plummeted to the lowest levels since satellite measurements began in 1979, according to researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder's National Snow and Ice Data Center. The average sea ice extent for the month of September was 1.65 million square miles (4.28 million square kilometers), the lowest September on record, shattering the previous record for the month by 23 percent, which was set in 2005. At the end of the melt season, September 2007 sea ice was 39 percent below the long-term average from 1979 to 2000.
