Health officials at the University of Colorado at Boulder are urging students, faculty and staff to be vigilant in their daily hygiene, frequently washing their hands and wiping down shared athletic equipment following detection and treatment of eight cases of community-associated MRSA, or Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, at the Wardenburg Health Center.

As part of continued efforts to turn the University of Colorado at Boulder into a "No Flu Zone," the Wardenburg Health Center will offer flu shots to students, faculty and staff during daylong clinics on Thursday, Oct. 25, and Friday, Oct. 26. Students also will be able to get meningitis shots. Flu shots will be available for $25 and meningitis shots for $125. The clinics will operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the CU-Boulder Student Recreation Center.

The University of Colorado at Boulder's 2007 Solar Decathlon Team took third place in the engineering contest, and seventh place overall in the third international solar home competition sponsored by the Department of Energy. Technische Universitat Darmstadt of Germany took first place overall, followed by the University of Maryland in second place and Santa Clara University in third.

A growing program at the University of Colorado at Boulder is working to combat what many experts call a looming crisis brought on by a shrinking pool of new K-12 science teachers. Known as the Colorado Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Learning Assistant project, its goal is to improve introductory math and science classes at CU-Boulder and to recruit and train future K-12 science teachers, according to Valerie Otero, director of the program and an assistant professor in CU-Boulder's School of Education.

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper will discuss homelessness and how it affects Denver and the rest of Colorado during a free public talk at the University of Colorado at Boulder Law School. The mayor will speak to law school students, faculty, staff, alumni and the general public from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, in the student commons on the second floor of the Wolf Law Building on the CU-Boulder campus.

Three journalists who have filed stories from Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait and an expert who specializes in keeping journalists safe in violence-torn regions of the world will participate in a panel discussion at the University of Colorado at Boulder. "Surviving the Assignment: 21st Century War Reporting and the Age of Blackwater" will take place from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in room 150 in the Eaton Humanities Building. The CU-Boulder School of Journalism and Mass Communication is sponsoring the event, which is free of charge and open to the public.

George Washington University Professor Bernard Wood, who has been working with Richard Leakey in Africa on early hominid research for nearly 40 years, will give a free public lecture at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Saturday, Oct. 27. The presentation by Wood, who directs the GWU Center for Advanced Study of Human Evolutionary History, is titled "Recent Advances in Our Understanding of Human Evolution." The event is the CU-Boulder anthropology department's annual Distinguished Biological Archaeology Lecture.

Attending one of the nation's leading schools for entrepreneurs, many students at the University of Colorado at Boulder's Leeds School of Business are interested in learning to run a business. One opportunity is the CU-Boulder student-owned and operated TREP Café, which re-opened for business this fall in the newly renovated and expanded Koelbel Building. Created with a loan from the Leeds School and the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship, the café began operations in fall 2005 as a coffee cart in the original business building.

Nearly 5,000 visitors are expected for this year's fall Family Weekend at the University of Colorado at Boulder, which is hosted by the CU-Boulder Parents Association. The Oct. 19-21 weekend event enables parents and other family members to visit students on campus and to participate in activities including a golf tournament, musical performances, a 5K fun run and walk, a faculty awards ceremony and the Colorado-Kansas football game, which will kickoff at 3:45 p.m. Saturday.
