MEDIA ADVISORY Administrators at the University of Colorado at Boulder have reached an agreement with a student group regarding university support for a proposal on a Designated Suppliers Program and will explain the agreement in a news briefing today at 4:30 p.m. on the south terrace of the University Memorial Center. Vice Chancellor for Administration Paul Tabolt and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Ron Stump will represent the CU-Boulder administration at the briefing.

Middle and high school students from across Colorado will descend on the University of Colorado at Boulder April 28 for an event demonstrating that energy conservation can start at any age. Bringing 150 students from 25 schools for what may be Colorado's largest energy education event of the year, the Colorado Energy Science Center's 2006 Home Energy Investigation Contest will showcase the students' findings from their investigation of the homes of their family and friends, and their recommendations for improving energy efficiency.

After several years of funding delays, the increasingly crowded building housing the University of Colorado at Boulder's Leeds School of Business will close May 12 for a yearlong $33.3 million renovation and expansion project. Leeds School classes and offices will move to various temporary locations for the summer and into the Fleming Law Building from fall 2006 through summer 2007. Originally designed to serve 1,400 students when it opened in spring 1970, the building currently serves more than twice that number, about 3,600 students.

Philip P. DiStefano, interim chancellor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is taking himself out of consideration for appointment as permanent chancellor, saying "it is the right decision for the overall good of the university."

More than 180 eighth-graders from Boulder's Southern Hills Middle School will visit the University of Colorado at Boulder on Friday, April 28, for an excursion involving lab tours, talks, science games and a field trip along Boulder Creek. The students will be hosted by CU-Boulder's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research and the National Snow and Ice Data Center on the university's East Campus. The students will be at CU-Boulder from about 9 a.m. to noon.

Hundreds of Colorado middle and high school students will be on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus Saturday, April 29, to compete in Colorado History Day. °µÍø½ûÇø 600 students in grades six through 12 will compete in the event, which is part of the largest national humanities education program in the country. The event is free and open to the public and will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the University Memorial Center and other campus locations.

More than 80 engineering student design projects including a Rube Goldberg smore-making machine, a water-balloon launcher and a 3-D maze will be demonstrated at the University of Colorado at Boulder's ITL Spring Design Expo April 29. The end-of-semester event, which is free and open to the public from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., will include interactive demonstrations in the Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory as well as outside on Herbst Plaza. The ITL Laboratory is located on Regent Drive just south of Colorado Avenue.

A candlelight vigil for Jesse Gomez, a University of Colorado at Boulder sophomore who died on April 9, will be held Tuesday, April 25, at 8:30 p.m. on Farrand Field on the CU-Boulder campus. People planning to attend the vigil are encouraged to bring a candle and to think of memories of Gomez they would like to share. Gomez, 18, was a first-year student at CU-Boulder from Lakewood majoring in electrical engineering and was a resident of Willard Hall. His friends and family are organizing the vigil.

Students, faculty and staff at the University of Colorado at Boulder need to be aware of the growing threat of mumps infection that has spread rapidly in some Midwestern states, including Iowa where state health officials have declared an epidemic. Iowa has had 975 cases of mumps since the end of January 2006, compared to five cases annually in recent years, the biggest outbreak of mumps in the past 17 years. People in the 18- to 25-year age group have been particularly hard hit, causing concern on college campuses.
