Telescope demonstrations, sunspot viewing and the unveiling of several new hands-on exhibits are among the highlights of Astronomy Day, a family-oriented event to be held on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus on Saturday, April 29.

MEDIA ADVISORY The University of Colorado at Boulder has accepted the chief recommendations of the Licensing Advisory Committee, which has expressed qualified support for the Designated Supplier Program proposed by the national United Students Against Sweatshop Apparel and campaigned for on the Boulder campus by students and others aligned with the Coalition Against Sweatshop Apparel (CASA).

Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Boulder will host four evening talks on April 27-28 to celebrate CU-Boulder's role in the successful and ongoing Cassini spacecraft mission to Saturn. Researchers involved in the Cassini mission will give talks each evening at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. in the planetarium.

Two women faculty members from the University of Colorado at Boulder will be inducted into the National Academy of Sciences on Saturday, April 22, in a ceremony in Washington, D.C. University of Colorado Museum Director and anthropology Professor Linda Cordell and Deborah Jin, a fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and an associate adjoint professor in CU-Boulder's physics department, will be honored at the ceremony in the NAS Great Hall. The public induction ceremony will be followed by a reception.

MEDIA ADVISORY The Licensing Advisory Committee of the University of Colorado at Boulder has forwarded a recommendation of "qualified support" for a proposal on a Designated Suppliers Program, which is being promoted by a national student organization including the group's CU-Boulder chapter. The recommendation was submitted on April 18 by Professor William Wei, chair of CU-Boulder's Licensing Advisory Committee, to Vice Chancellor for Administration Paul Tabolt. Two nationally prominent scientists will participate in a free public program April 25 at the University of Colorado at Boulder on the fossil and biological evidence for evolution titled "Fossils and Genes: Exploring the Evolution of Life."

Author Mary Matsuda-Gruenewald will discuss her experiences in a World War II internment camp and the lingering impacts the camps have had on the Japanese-American community during a talk at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The University of Colorado at Boulder will honor four distinguished engineering alumni at the 41st annual Engineering Awards Banquet on April 21. The recipients include the chief aerodynamicist for SpaceShipOne, which won the $10 million Ansari X-Prize, an expert in marine structures who helped to design the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge, a CU-Boulder faculty member in chemical engineering and a professor of computer science at the University of Tokyo. Dean Robert H. Davis will present the 2006 Distinguished Engineering Alumni Awards to the following alumni:

Clifford G. Christians, a leading scholar in media ethics, will present "Truth in a Technological Age" at the University of Colorado at Boulder on April 27. The event will be held at 7 p.m. in Norlin Library's British and Irish Studies room as part of the annual Ralph L. Crosman Memorial Lecture. It is sponsored by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and is free and open to the public.
