"Just Desserts," a CU-Boulder Friends of the Libraries annual event, is scheduled for Friday, May 19, at 7 p.m. in the British and Irish Studies Room on the 5th floor of Norlin Library. A wine and dessert reception will begin the event, followed by guest presenter, Baine P. Kerr.

Pennsylvania State University Professor Robert Turrisi will present the latest results of a multi-state, parent-based intervention program involving teen-agers and binge drinking on Tuesday, May 9, at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The event will be at 3 p.m. in the West Solarium of Wardenburg Health Center, located southeast of the University Memorial Center. Seating is limited. Pay parking is available at the Euclid AutoPark, located just east of the UMC.

The University of Colorado at Boulder received the 2006 School Recycling Award in the college and university category from the American Forest & Paper Association in Washington, D.C. The University of Oregon also received the award in a tie for category honors. Established in 1976, CU Recycling has become one of the leading campus recycling programs in the nation. The program's mission is to divert recyclables from the waste stream in a cost-effective way while promoting the benefits of recycling and providing opportunities for meaningful student involvement.

After a 15-year quest that included losing most of her eyesight, Paulette Foss will soon receive her doctoral degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Foss, 53, and her guide dog Aries will attend the May 12 commencement ceremony at CU-Boulder. After successfully defending her thesis in April, she will officially receive her doctorate in anthropology in August.

University of Colorado at Boulder students have won Truman, Udall, Goldwater and National Security Education Program scholarships this spring, marking the first time a Colorado university has been home to winners of all four of the highly competitive national scholarships at once.

Nine University of Colorado at Boulder students will receive scholarships from the Puksta Scholars Program on the basis of their civic responsibility, high ethical standards and strong academic goals. Lilia Justman, Admira Makas, Mark Arnoldy, Matthew Bloise, Daniel Epstein, Sean Sheppard, Joseph Ayoub, Stuart Hayden and David Chiu each will receive a $4,500 scholarship in recognition of their commitment to civic engagement. They will join nine scholars already in the program.

The University of Colorado at Boulder's Center of the American West will kick off its summer lecture series with a musical celebration of its 20th anniversary on Sunday, May 14, in Chautauqua Park. "Music by Jubilate! Sacred Singers and Cowboy Poetry with Dr. George Russell: A Birthday Party for the Center of the American West" will be held in Chautauqua Auditorium starting at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $12 for the general public and $10 for Chautauqua members. Mothers are especially welcome at this Mother's Day event.

University of Colorado at Boulder professors Margaret Murnane and Reid Hastie have joined former Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton and film director Martin Scorsese in the 2006 class of new fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Murnane and Hastie were among 175 new fellows of the prestigious academy announced late last month. The academy is comprised of scholars and practitioners from mathematics, physics, biological sciences, social sciences, humanities and the arts, public affairs and business. Fellows are nominated and elected by current members.

While Earth's ozone layer is slowly being replenished following an international 1987 agreement banning CFCs, the recovery is occurring in a changing atmosphere and is unlikely to stabilize at pre-1980 levels, says a new University of Colorado at Boulder study.

An action plan from the University of Colorado at Boulder pledging increased scholarship awards, diversity training for students and top administrators and more support for the highly successful Pre-Collegiate Development Program has been forwarded to the Blue Ribbon Commission and CU President Hank Brown.
