A new study involving the University of Colorado at Boulder that modeled the spread of forest fires in Colorado and other western states indicates the size and intensity of fires is directly linked with the density and flammability of houses built in the so-called "wildland-urban interface."

The University of Colorado at Boulder received about $266.2 million in sponsored research awards in fiscal year 2007, the highest total in campus history. The sponsored research total surpasses the previous CU-Boulder record of $259.7 million set in the 2004 fiscal year, said Office of Contracts and Grants Director Randall Draper. CU-Boulder first topped the $200 million mark in 1999. °µÍø½ûÇø 85 percent of CU-Boulder's sponsored research total for 2007 comes from both direct and indirect federal funding, he said.

New rules adopted by the Federal Communications Commission will change the way we communicate in a wireless world. The FCC changed its rules as part of an upcoming auction of valuable UHF spectrum once used for analogue television broadcasting. Wireless service providers who bid on the spectrum must now agree to "unlock" their services so that consumers can pick any smart phone or other wireless device and load any software on it. Consumers currently are limited to what the wireless carrier wants them to use.

Several residence halls, classrooms and administrative buildings at the University of Colorado at Boulder were without power for four and one-half hours in the early morning hours on Wednesday, Aug. 29, making some students late for early classes but not affecting most of the 3,967 students in the 15 affected halls.

Personal safety has been an important goal at the University of Colorado at Boulder for years, but the issue has taken on even greater significance following the recent, random attack on a first-year student.

As student leaders of the University of Colorado at Boulder, we would like to let the entire campus community know of our concern regarding the events that occurred on Monday, August 27th, outside of the University Memorial Center. We are working closely with the University's administration to enforce all safety plans throughout the campus. Though we recognize that this attack was an isolated incident, it is a reminder to all students, faculty, and staff to always be vigilant and aware of your own safety on the campus.

A freshman student at the University of Colorado at Boulder was resting after surgery Monday afternoon to repair a neck wound following a random stabbing by a middle-aged man who stormed the terrace of the campus student union in Boulder this morning. The studentÂ’s family has consented to his identification. He is Michael George Knorps, 17, of Winnetka, Ill.

• The victim of the stabbing, Michael George Knorps, 17, is a freshman from Wannetka, Ill. He has undergone surgery at Boulder Community Hospital and is doing well. CU-Boulder Chancellor G.P. “Bud” Peterson has been in communication with Mr. Knorps’ family since late this morning.

MEDIA ADVISORY A news conference on today's stabbing incident at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held in room 235 of the University Memorial Center beginning at 5 p.m. Participants will include representatives from the CU Police and campus administration. The University Memorial Center is located near the intersection of Broadway and Euclid Avenue on the CU-Boulder campus. The CU Police Department has reported that there was a stabbing incident at the University Memorial Center at approximately 9:45 a.m. today. The suspect has been taken into custody. The victim has been taken to the hospital and appears to be stable. CU officials have been in communication with the family of the student victim. The south side of the UMC has been secured, the suspect's car is being searched and the police are continuing their investigation.
