The University of Colorado at Boulder was ranked 35th among the nation's public universities offering doctoral degrees in U.S. News & World Report's undergraduate rankings released today in the magazine's 2008 edition of America's Best Colleges. CU-Boulder was tied for 35th with the University of California, Santa Cruz. In the ranking of all doctoral universities, public and private, CU-Boulder was tied for 79th with UC-Santa Cruz and Brigham Young University.

University of Colorado at Boulder researchers are now forecasting a 92 percent chance that the 2007 September minimum extent of sea ice across the Arctic region will set an all-time record low. The researchers, who forecast in April a 33 percent chance the September minimum of sea ice would set a new record, dramatically revised their prediction following a rapid disintegration of sea ice during July, said Research Associate Sheldon Drobot of CU-Boulder's Colorado Center for Astrodynamics.

The effects of global energy use on the climate and the impact climate change will have on future generations are among the topics to be discussed during an Aug. 30 symposium at the University of Colorado at Boulder. "The Global Energy Crisis: Climate Change, Mitigation and Adaptation," will be presented in the University Memorial Center, room 235, at 6 p.m. The event is the 12th annual CU-Boulder Graduate School symposium, traditionally held on the first Thursday of the new fall semester.

A series of advertisements designed to promote the hundreds of events that take place annually on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus are being displayed on Boulder buses featuring "Art Buffs," "Music Buffs" and others from August through October.

A smorgasbord of culturally diverse food and music will highlight the University of Colorado at Boulder's annual Global Jam festival on Aug. 24. Sponsored by the Department of Housing and Dining Services, Global Jam will be held on Farrand Field following the 11:30 a.m. mandatory convocation given by Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson to all new students in Folsom Stadium.

When the University of Colorado at Boulder undertook a year-long strategic planning process last fall, CU-Boulder Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson had two guiding principles for the work.

New furniture, retiled bathrooms, freshly painted rooms and updated wiring for the wireless Internet era are among the upgrades students will find in several University of Colorado at Boulder residence halls this fall. More than $22 million in renovations took place at a half dozen residence and dining halls this summer as part of the university's annual effort to increase conveniences and comfort for students adjusting to life away from home.

Professor Manuel Laguna has been named associate dean of faculty for the University of Colorado at Boulder's Leeds School of Business. Laguna, a professor of operations management in the Leeds School, will be responsible for research and technology support, faculty recruiting and evaluation, the doctoral program, faculty retention and resolving faculty issues. He assumed the position Aug. 1, succeeding Professor Ken Kozar.

An array of activities await new students at the University of Colorado at Boulder beginning Aug. 21 including a welcome convocation hosted by Chancellor G.P. “Bud” Peterson, a “Global Jam” featuring international food and music, hiking and biking tours, outdoor movies and picnics.

University of Colorado at Boulder students take their recreation seriously, and to prove it they voted to spend $5.7 million to improve campus intramural sports fields, such as Farrand Field. CU-Boulder's newly renovated Farrand Field, a longtime student favorite for studying, playing sports and relaxing, will be dedicated on Friday, Aug. 17, at 12:30 p.m. Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson will give a speech during the ceremony. The dedication also will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, talks from student representatives and yard games.
