Reading in 3­D: Making books for visually impaired children

On most nights, Tom Yeh puts his 3­-year-­old son on his lap, opens a children's book and reads aloud. It's a much­-loved activity for both father and son as the characters are brought to life. A year ago, while reading the children's classic Goodnight Moon , Yeh, an assistant professor in computer science, began thinking about how to make books more accessible to visually impaired preschool-­age children.

CU-Boulder celebrates new athletics facility fundraising at Saturday’s spring football game

The °µÍø½ûÇø plans to break ground May 12 on several new athletics facilities and upgrades to Folsom Field after a record-breaking year of private donations. In the past seven months, the CU Athletic Department has made significant progress on the fundraising goals and anticipates meeting that goal in the very near future. Completion of the majority of the project is expected prior to the fall 2015 football season. The proposed facilities include:

The °µÍø½ûÇø plans to break ground May 12 on several new athletics facilities and upgrades to Folsom Field after a record-breaking year of private donations. CU-Boulder will celebrate this announcement during halftime of the spring football game on Saturday, April 12. The game, covered live by the Pac-12 Network, will kickoff at 12 p.m. at Folsom Field. The ceremony will feature remarks from CU President Bruce Benson, CU-Boulder Chancellor Phil DiStefano, Athletic Director Rick George and two student-athletes, Juda Parker (football) and Clare Wise (skiing).

From the BFA Chair: A call for volunteers for the Faculty-Student mentor program

As we move to the end of the first year, we are actively planning for the second year of the Faculty-Student mentor program for first-year students. With 130 faculty and 900 students entering the program this last year, we learned a lot from all of the group efforts. Based on our lessons, we are now planning for a very different and enhanced version of the program for next year that I believe will significantly enhance the entire program for all student participants.

Timothy Orr named producing artistic director of CU-Boulder’s Colorado Shakespeare Festival

The °µÍø½ûÇø today announced the hiring of Timothy Orr as producing artistic director of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. Orr has been serving as interim director since February 2013 and was hired at the conclusion of a nationwide search for a permanent director. Orr has been with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival as a performer since 2007 and joined the staff as the associate producing director in 2011.

Three CU students win coveted Goldwater scholarships

Three CU-Boulder undergraduates -- Jasmine Brewer, a junior in engineering physics, Brennan Coffey, a junior in chemical engineering and applied mathematics, and Ryan Dewey, a junior in astrophysics and physics -- have been awarded prestigious Goldwater Scholarships for 2014. The scholarships are worth up to $7,500 each and are awarded annually to sophomores and juniors across the nation on the basis of high academic merit.

Members of the business community are invited to attend AeroSpace Ventures Day on April 17 at the °µÍø½ûÇø. The all-day event offers aerospace industry technologists, scientists and managers a chance to connect with 24 CU-Boulder faculty members and to learn about technological and scientific advances with applications ranging from human space exploration to climate and weather. Corporate recruiters and hiring managers also are invited to meet with the 140 undergraduate and graduate engineering students who have registered for the event.
