CU-Boulder Kicks Off Yearlong Computer Security Education Campaign

E-mail scams designed to collect social security and bank account numbers are among the current threats to computer security outlined in a new awareness campaign at the University of Colorado at Boulder. CU-Boulder Information Technology Services has begun a yearlong educational effort focusing on computer security and will address a specific topic each month. Organizers are focusing on privacy and identity-theft issues during February. Campus ITS experts said that in most cases, computer security is all about what you do rather than what you buy.

CU's Al Bartlett To Give Renowned Talk On Exponential Growth Feb. 26

Due to popular demand, CU-Boulder Professor Emeritus Al Bartlett will give his celebrated talk, "Arithmetic, Population and Energy: Sustainability 101" on Saturday, Feb. 26. Bartlett, of the University of Colorado at Boulder physics department, has given the lecture over 1,540 times since 1969. The talk warns of the perilous effects of population growth and of growth in rates of consumption of nonrenewable resources. The talk will begin at 10 a.m. in room G1B30 in the east wing of the Duane Physics building on the CU-Boulder campus.

Colorado University Students To Support Higher Ed At The Capitol

MEDIA ADVISORY More than 100 students from four state university campuses will promote higher education at a news conference Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. on the west steps of the state Capitol as part of a campaign in support of higher education in Colorado. The coalition has designated Wednesday "I Love Higher Education Day" and has planned several events in Denver around that theme.

Liquid Crystals Topic Of CU Wizards Feb. 19 Show

The scientific concepts of light, polarization and optics will be explained through a number of experiments, including creating a giant soap bubble, during the Feb. 19 CU Wizards show "Light, Polarization and Liquid Crystals." University of Colorado at Boulder physics Professor Noel Clark and chemistry Professor David Walba will present the show at 9:30 a.m. in Duane Physics room G1B30. The show, aimed primarily at students in grades five through nine, is free and open to the public.

CU-Boulder Committees On Diversity And Women Name Service Award Recipients

The Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Minority Affairs and the Chancellor's Committee on Women at the University of Colorado at Boulder have selected recipients of 2004-05 service recognition awards. The CACMA awards are given to campus units to recognize continuing efforts to create a diverse, supportive, learning, working and living environment for the multicultural campus community. This year's CACMA award recipients are the Minority Arts and Sciences Program, the Pre-Collegiate Development Program, the School of Law and the Latina/o Law Student Association.

CU-Boulder's Vice Provost Named Editor Of Applied Math Journal

Bobby Schnabel, vice provost for academic and campus technology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been named the next editor-in-chief of SIAM Review, the flagship journal of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. SIAM's membership is made up of applied and computational mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, statisticians and mathematical educators.

Pluto Discovery Anniversary, CU Instrument Installment On NASA Spacecraft Marked Feb. 18

The University of Colorado at Boulder will mark the 75th anniversary of the discovery of the planet Pluto on Feb. 18 with a 4 p.m. event at the site of the Colorado Scale Model Solar System, a unique scale-model walking tour of the solar system. The anniversary celebration will be held just west of the Math Building on campus, where the model of Pluto is located.

CU-Boulder Libraries Presents "Youth Around The World," A Photo Exhibit By Marilyn Wertheimer

The University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries presents "Youth Around the World," a photo exhibit by Marilyn Wertheimer, in the Norlin Library third floor northwest gallery through March 31. Wertheimer, a retired CU-Boulder librarian, has taken thousands of pictures since 1960 during extensive world travel. The exhibit, featuring 50 pictures of young people taken in 29 different countries, also was displayed at the Boulder Public Library last fall.

Properties Of Quantum Mechanics To Be Examined At CU Talk Feb. 19

The University of Colorado at Boulder's physics department will continue its Saturday Physics Series with a presentation on the properties of light on Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. in Duane Physics room G1B30. Physics Associate Professor Daniel Dessau will present his talk on "The Hundredth Anniversary of Einstein's Quantum of Light: Particles, Waves and Uncertainty." The presentation is free and open to the public.
